Conditions You Can Change in Order to Rid a Building of Pests

Blog

Pests are not only a big annoyance, but they can also be a health hazard in most commercial properties. Trying to rid a building of pests can be a major undertaking depending on the type or pests and amount of pests that have infiltrated the building. Instead of dealing with insecticides and pesticides, it is possible to get rid of pests by understanding the conditions that they require to survive. You can change the conditions or factors in a way that encourages pests to find a new home and desert your property. These conditions can be altered once you are familiar with how they affect pests. Making sure to consult building and pest inspection contractors if you have specific questions.

Temperature

Temperature is something that is extremely important to pests of all types. Many pests require a specific temperature range in order to survive. This is especially true for insects and spiders, but is not as integral for rodents and birds. It is typically the cold air currents within buildings that attract ants and flies during the summer months. This means that you can adjust the temperature in certain parts of the building to make the climate less than ideal for insects.

Moisture

It is also important to remember that moisture is critical to the survival of most pests. You might think that it is puddles of water surrounding the building that most attract pests, but it is actually water underneath ground covering plants that attracts many types of pests. This means that you need to look at the vegetation that covers the ground near your building. Ground covering vegetation should be removed and shrubs or trees should be planted in their place. This is one of the best ways to prevent pests from seeking shelter inside of your building. Since the moisture won't be present, they won't be looking to gain access.

Food

It is also important to note that pests require food for survival. Different types of pests eat different types of foods, but having a dumpster in close proximity to your building can cause pests to congregate. Making sure that all trash is bagged before being placed in a dumpster will cut back on odours and making sure the dumpster is located away from the building will cut down on the pests that look to access the actual building. Having the dumpster positioned right next to the building only makes things easier for the pests and increases the likelihood that they will try to get inside.
